Install by name

Packages

The software Nextweb installs by name today, with the version each name installs, its size, and its checksum.

Applications

  • WordPress

WordPress is software for running a website you manage from your web browser. You sign in to its dashboard to write pages and blog posts, add images, and publish them, without writing code. A theme sets how the site looks, and plugins add features.

On Nextweb: Nextweb installs it with the PHP and MariaDB it needs and deploys it as a website.

    pkg install wordpress · 7.1.3 · Linux x64

Services

  • MariaDB

MariaDB is a database server: it keeps information in tables and hands it back when a program asks for it. WordPress stores everything you write in it, from posts and pages to user accounts and settings. MariaDB works with software made for MySQL, including WordPress.

On Nextweb: Nextweb runs it as the database service its WordPress sites share.

    pkg install mariadb-11.4.5-linux-x64 · 11.4.5 · Linux x64

Runtimes

  • PHP

PHP is a programming language made for websites. A PHP program runs on the server each time someone opens a page, and builds the page they see. WordPress is written in PHP, so it needs PHP to run. You don't write any PHP yourself to use WordPress.

On Nextweb: Nextweb starts one for each site that needs it.

    pkg install php8.3.9-linux-x64 · 8.3.9 · Linux x64

These are the packages you can install by name today. You can also package an application of your own: the second lesson builds one, publishes it, and installs it by name. A public catalog that anyone can publish to is still on the roadmap, under Not yet.
